OLD HUISH ASSOCIATION

SUMMER LUNCH 2014

53 members of the OHA, together with members of staff from the College, sat down to their traditionally convivial traditional Summer Lunch on Friday 16th May. We were welcomed effusively by our Chairman David Gill, who reported on the strong turn out and continuing good health of the Association, and applauded those who had managed to face the challenge of the local road works to arrive on time. He was especially pleased to welcome a new member, John Watts, who had left Huish’s Grammar School in 1945! Following the carvery Lunch, members were in generous mood for the raffle and we raised over £330 for the good cause, which this year is Selworthy Special School. As usual, we will be looking to raise further funds at our Annual Dinner in November – make your diary note now, it is Saturday 15th November at Somerset County Cricket Club. We will be entertained this year by a former College student now plying her trade on the professional comedy circuit, Laura Lexx. After Lunch, the vote of thanks was given by Doug Dawe and the final guests left around mid-afternoon.

Summer Lunch 2015

CHAIRMAN GETS A CHAIR!

The Association's Annual Summer Lunch was held on Friday 15th May 2015 at Oake Manor Golf Club. A wonderfully sunny summer's day saw almost 50 diners sit down at a new venue, with the usual high quality lunch. Ill health had prevented several "regulars" form joining, but David welcomed all with his usual bonhomie. He remarked that 2015 was the 400th Anniversary of the death of Richard Huish himself, a man whose wealth had done much for this town, both through direct endowments and through the successes of those pupils who had passed through Huish over the years.

In similar - though smaller - vein, the day was also David's swansong after 26 years in the chair of the Association. He reminded us that he had been asked by the President, George Bennett, to take the helm after the unexpected death of the then Chairman Michael Hole. George's selling point had been that 6 months would be sufficient…!

David reminded us all that the proceeds of the raffle today would be added to other Association funds, the whole to be split 50/50 between the Musgrove Hospital League of Friends and a bursary for a college student.

After the Lunch, John Moore and Peter Gibbs delivered another successful raffle, with a groaning table of prizes, almost sufficient for one for each. The proceeeds amounted to a whisker under £300

Then the Association Secretary, Nick Williams rose to propose the health of, and thanks to, David for chairing the Association for so long and so well. There could be no doubt that the growth and the accomplishments of the Association were down to David's energy, determination and perseverance. The gratitude of the Association's members was demonstrated by the retiring gift - a comfortable chair for well-earned relaxation on the balcony of David's flat! David expressed his thanks to us all, for friendhip and fellowship, and gave especial thanks to those who had again "lent a hand" to the running of the event today. He was pleased that the OHA had continued to grow, and especially pleased that the charitable nature of the OHA was growing. In the last 10 years, for example, some £9,000 had been given in support of local charities, all chosen by the members. Finally, he looked forward to meeting us all at the Dinner in November, where he could do rather less work than usual for once!
