2011

DINNERS & LUNCHES

The 2011 OHA Summer Luncheon was held on a blazing summer's day at Taunton Vale golf club, on 6th May. 45 diners, including 18 members here for their first time, were present. Our President and Chairman, David Gill, reported that a cheque for £1,200 had been presented by the OHA to SURE at our Annual Dinner last November, and that we had therefore set the bar very high for this year's good cause, the Taunton Opportunity Group (TOG). Membership remained constant at around 300, although we had sadly lost 7 members during the past 12 months.

David added that the committee had now completed their discussions regarding the 2011 Annual Dinner and there would indeed be both a speaker and entertainment. He concluded by wishing all present good food and good fellowship.

After an excellent meal, John & Maureen Moore and Peter & Ann Gibbs, took charge of the raffle for a sumptuous array of donated prizes. At the end of the Luncheon, the raffle and donations had raised £304 for our good cause.

The 2011 Annual Dinner (our 107th) took place at the Taunton Rugby Club on Saturday 19th November. Ticket sales suggested the best attendance since 2006.

Guests travelling a distance included: Bob Nesbitt from Perth; Steve Coles from Aberdeen, and Margaret and Geoff Bridle from N Yorkshire. Ray Handford from Stafford had organised a table of his contemporaries from 1957 > 1964.

Our chairman David Gill reported that membership had remained constant: we had sadly lost 7 members but happily gained 7 as well, 3 of whom were present: David Quick, Bernard Stacey and John Jeremiah. A number of those present were not yet paid-up Members and David eagerly reminded them all of the tremendous value of a £10 Life Membership subscription!

Looking back at the year, the attendance at the AGM was well down but more than offset by the very happy and successful Annual Lunch at the Taunton Vale golf club in May.

David reminded all present of the charitable purpose of this years work - Taunton Opportunity Group - and asked that Members give some thought to any charity which would welcome the Association's support during 2012. He would be pleased to hear from any Member.

David concluded by thanking those who had helped so much in organising the event: Dr Peter Avery and his PA Karen Williams from the College; Peter Gibbs and Gent Musgrave from the Association; and Nick Williams and all at Porter Dodson.

Members stood in tribute to the following Members known to have died since the last Annual Dinner: Leslie Bowerman, Don Morton, Eric Seaford, Tony Musgrave, C H Taylor, Jack Snow and Ron Lane (whose coffin had borne his prefect's cap from his school days)

Rev Barry Cramp then said Grace and everybody tucked in!

Our entertainment was the renowned Magic Circle magician, Mr Nigel Ford, who proceeeded to astound and amaze, in remarkable style. His Magic Goose will live in our minds for ever.........!

Apologies were received from: John & Dawn Davies, Alan Trott, Brian Hordle, Rosemary Thomas, Don Holcombe, Brian Clemett, Peter Lee, Chris Willey, Tony Weetch, Bob Pendleton, Tony Osmond and Norman White. Many of these members had kindly made a donation, in lieu of the missed opportunity to take part in the raffle and auction!

Finally, your web manager apologises to all for the lack of photographs of the evening, but he had noticably less spare time than he had anticipated.
